SALMAN KHAN – One of the 3 great Khans of Bollywood, who has an army of millions screaming his name in appreciation. As soon as a Bhai film is available on the silver screen, the army of Salmaniacs will storm the theatres making it a huge commercial success. But, does it justify the mighty Salman Khan’s credibility as an actor? I don’t think so and I believe many will agree with me as well.
Let’s take the recent Race 3 into account which was released on the occasion of Eid. That awful movie affected even some of the hardcore Sallu Bhai fans. Twitter exploded with criticism and many individuals like me weren’t even able to complete the film. But do you know? It still grossed nearly about Rs 29 crore on its opening day surpassing even the likes of P.K. & MS Dhoni – The Untold Story. If you check the list of the best opening day records, you’ll find almost all the recent Sallu Bhai films are on it. There’s no way a guy with so much fan following and such records to his name will be bad at acting – a business where acting is all that matters. Then, what’s the deal?
Honestly, I would consider Salman Khan as a lazy actor rather than calling him a bad one. Radhe in Tere Naam, Prem in Andaz Apna Apna, Bajrangi in Bajrangi Bhaijaan – These performances by the veteran actor proves he is great in diverse roles and he can really bring the character to life. We all felt the tragedy of Radhe and I can bet, we all cried. Salman’s chemistry with Aamir Khan in Andaz Apna Apna and the comedic chops require multiple viewings to satisfy the craving. And as for Bajrangi Bhaijaan, the story had a heart and he did his part beautifully. Not to mention his role as Chulbul Pandey in Dabangg (Only the first movie) where he literally embodied that character and delivered a brilliant performance that will compel you to cheer for the half Robinhood when he does physics-defying things. It’s true. But what the problem is now, it has become all about money.
The type of movies that started from Wanted, that larger than life portrayal, that dry comedy, same old action plot with zero-depth – that kept on going with no intention to slow down any time soon. Yes, in the beginning, those movies were fun, and good popcorn flicks. Like Wanted, Ek Tha Tiger, Bodyguard. But then, it became routine. The same type of portrayal, the same protagonist and plot. The reason? Well, the public’s watching it, studios are getting their money, so why not? Let’s make another one. And thus, we were presented with disasters like Ready, Sultan, Dabangg 2 & 3, Tiger Zinda He, Tubelight and RACE 3.
So, being able to do movies like Tere Naam and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, then submitting to horrors like Race 3 is simply the example of Salman Khan’s laziness towards his profession. Moreover, he is ignorant towards himself. Yes! Salman Khan is a great host, he is entertaining and sure, he is still one of the most handsome guys in the B-Town! But, none of these are put into good production. Everything is now about box office collections. Recently, after the trailer release of Salman Khan’s latest movie Radhe (I’ll get there in a moment), he is once again part of the same controversy.
52-year-old Sallu Bhai has always been the controversy’s favourite child though. Salman Khan has often been found on the wrong side of the law as well. Besides being found guilty of killing a protected animal like Deer, he was accused in 2002 of running over five homeless men in Mumbai, killing one of them. So, there’s a backlash over there from fans as well. Nonetheless, he is still one of India’s biggest and most popular movie stars who has starred in nearly 100 Hindi-language films. He is known for action films and his romantic roles in Bollywood films. The fan following this man has, very few in the entire entertainment business dream of. Alas! With his ongoing approach to his films, it’s only upsetting the general audience but also making his long time fans shake their heads.
The theatrical trailer of Salman Khan’s Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai dropped today which will be released on the Eid weekend, 13th May which is as expected. This A-list film will be made available in all locations, including theatres and OTT platforms. It’s the new hybrid release model that started with Wonder Woman 1984. Radhe also stars Disha Patani, Randeep Hooda, and Jackie Shroff. It’s directed by Prabhudeva. International release in territories like the Middle East, Australia-New Zealand, Europe and the UK, Singapore, and North America will be in theatres.
Now, coming to the trailer, does Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai offer something new? Something, that doesn’t show a larger than life hero? A plot, not revolving around cheeky dialogues and physics-defying actions? Where the female lead has something to contribute to the movie? NO! A BIG F NO! From the trailer, it looked like a total mash-up of Wanted, Race 3 and Kick. Yes! Exactly that. The same old pattern is here as well! Although, Randeep Hooda and Jackie Shroff looked cool in the trailer, however, our Bhai was the same as always! Radhe is unfortunately or maybe, too, fortunately, another popcorn flick that Bhai fans love sp much. Twitter is already flooding with Salman fans appreciating the trailer and announcing it as a super hit movie. Within 10 hours, it has about 40 lakh views on YouTube. And I am pretty sure, it will surely break some box office records, despite the COVID-19. After all, it’s a Sallu Bhai movie!
Now, few questions still remain. Is Salman Khan really a bad actor? If not, then why won’t he take on versatile roles? Is it just about the money? A big-budget formula that seems to bring box office returns and that’s it. He won’t be bothering himself with the plot or character development at all! Radhe trailer seems to be hinting towards these assumptions as well. Then again, who are we to judge? Bhai Jaan is still a fan favourite and will enjoy a Sallu Bhai movie regardless of anything and everything. Incredible India!
