Every year on the 16th of October, World Food Day 2021 is celebrated all across the world. The primary focus of the day is to eradicate hunger globally. This day raises awareness to those who are hungry around the world and also about the importance of food security and nutritious meals for all. All UN member states, including India, commemorate the day. Several food security organizations, such as the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the World Food Program, and others, observe the day.

Food is one of the most basic prerequisites for human survival. A human can survive without proper clothes and shelter, but he/she can’t survive without good food. Food is a basic need and fundamental human right for all. Hence, to make people aware of the importance of good nutrition and food, World Food Day is commemorated in various ways around the world.

History of World Food Day
World Food Day commemorates the founding of the United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in 1945. In 1979, UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) at its 20th General Conference designated October 16 as World Food Day. In December 1980, the UN General Assembly approved this decision and appealed to governments and organizations from all around the world to participate in the celebrations of World Food Day. And from 1981, this day is held every year on October 16.

Last year, on World Food Day 2020, the 75th anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was celebrated. The day has gradually grown into a global event, raising awareness about food scarcity and rejuvenating food systems all around the world.

Significance and Celebrations of World Food Day
World Food Day organizes a variety of programs and activities to raise awareness of the importance of food security and proper nutrition for all people, with a special focus on needy and helpless people around the world.

On this day, a variety of activities are planned. At the FAO headquarter in Rome; a large-scale program is organized every year that primarily emphasizes the importance of food supply. Symposia, conferences, workshops, and lectures on themes such as food production, distribution, and security are held by some UN organizations and universities all across the world.

● Undernutrition is responsible for around half of all fatalities in children under the age of five.
