It was the opening night of the 14th Indian Premier League and Royal Challengers Bangalore was the one to steal all the glory from the reigning champions, Mumbai Indians. A fantabulous 27-ball 48 knock of AB de Villiers and Harshal Patel’s five-wicket haul was the key to the success of Virat Kohli’s team in the first match of IPL 2021.

While chasing a 160-run target, there were a few ups and downs here and there. Nonetheless, the game went till the last ball and it was a great opening for Kohli’s side in IPL 2021.

From the very beginning, luck was on RCB’s side as they won the toss and elected to bowl first. Virat Kohli won the toss and sent Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians to bat first. Despite a good start with Chris Lynn’s 49 and Suryakumar Yadav’s 31, Mumbai could only post 159 in 20 overs. Credits to the RCB bowlers, especially Harshal Patel who changed the face of the game right after coming into action. Ishan Kishan, The Pandya brothers, Pollard – all fell prey to his spell. In fact, Harshal managed to achieve a feat that no other bowler has ever done in the IPL. Harshal Patel became the only bowler to have a 5-wicket haul against Mumbai Indians in IPL.

After restricting Rohit Sharma’s side for 159, RCB started off with a surprising twist for the chase. Virat Kohli brought Washington Sundar as his opening partner. Sundar did an excellent job in the Test series during the Australia tour, however, he was unable to display the same impact in this game. Virat’s gamble didn’t pay off and he had to depart soon after Krunal Pandya came into action. Rajat Patidar’s debut wasn’t long lasting either. However, as Glenn Maxwell came along, things started getting better for the Bangalore side once again.

The partnership between Kohli and Maxwell was brought to an end after Jasprit Bumrah took out the set skipper. Then Trent Boult and Marco Jansen also came in to attack while bringing the momentum back to MI’s side. Nonetheless, AB de Villiers with a fine 27-ball 48 kept RCB in the game and despite his dismissal, Harshal Patel was able to win the match in the very last ball. RCB won the first game of IPL 2021, and Mumbai Indians’ opening game jinx is still on the run.

Harshal Patel was named Man of the Match for his excellent spell of 4-0-27-5. It was a match-winning performance by Patel and AB De Villiers. Glen Maxwell is back in form as well. Things are looking quite bright for Virat Kohli’s side. However, only time will tell if this time, the highest run-scorer of IPL can win the league for the first time!

Today’s match is between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals. Fans would be delighted to see their favourite Mahendra Singh Dhoni once again in action. However, people won’t take their eyes off the Man of the Hour, Rishabh Pant either. The match begins at 07:30 PM IST.
