On Wednesday, 20 October Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Kushinagar International Airport in Uttar Pradesh. Opposition political forces call it a stroke to divert attention from serious incidents for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh election 2022. On the other hand, the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) marks the event as a foundation stone of various development projects in Kushinagar.

As per the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the first flight that will land in Kushinagar airport is a charter plane from Colombo with more than 100 Buddhist monks and Sri Lankan delegation including a 12 member holy relic entourage.

Kushinagar is the place where Lord Buddha took “Mahaparinirivana”. Kushinagar international airport costs Rs 260 crore thus facilitates the pilgrimage of Lord Buddha and also on the other side aims to boost the economy of the region. This airport comes under the regional connectivity scheme UDAN, Truejet and SpiceJet have been facilitated with flights to connect Kushinagar with Gaya, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Saharanpur, and Hindon (near Delhi).

Joytiraditya Scindia union Civil aviation minister said, “Kushinagar have direct four flights weekly to Delhi from November 26. Whereas from December 18 the region will also get direct flights from Mumbai and Kolkata”. Scindia will also be present at the inauguration ceremony with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and other ministers.

The inflow of tourism is expected to rise up by 20 percent with the inauguration of the airport. The terminal is provided to handle 300 passengers during the peak hour. The new terminal building spread across 3600sqm. More than two crore population will be benefited from the airport. This will also promote the export in the region which is a hotspot of bananas, strawberries, and mushrooms.

The Kushinagar airport project came up in 2008 by then chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. The then UP government allocated 590 acres of land for this greenfield project. But this was declared international airport last June.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said, “we have heard that PM Modi is going to inaugurate the airport which has been constructed by Samajwadi Party. BJP government has changed the colors and give their name to someone else’s work and lay the foundation and inaugurate thing afresh”.

The Kushinagar international airport inauguration ceremony comes ahead of the crucial Uttar Pradesh assembly election 2022. PM Modi remarked Kushinagar International airport is the result of decades of hope. He said that it is time for fulfillment of the commitments to the public of Kushinagar.

The government is planning to set up 17 more airports in the state. That will be lauded the progress of development of the airport in Uttar Pradesh. Through these developments, the BJP government tries to aim for the upcoming assembly election of the state.
