Teenager Climate Activist Greta Thunberg took to social media on Friday and extended her support for activist Disha Ravi after her arrest. Ravi was arrested on charges of ‘sharing and spreading an incriminating toolkit’ related to farmers’ protest. According to the police investigation, the toolkit allegedly led to the Tractor Rally violence on 26th January.
Thunberg shared a picture of Disha Ravi on Facebook and wrote, “Freedom of speech and the right to peaceful protest and assembly are non-negotiable human rights. These must be a fundamental part of any democracy. #StandWithDishaRavi.” She shared the same message on Twitter while sharing a thread by Fridays for Future India.
The thread of Fridays For Future (FFF) supported Ravi and shed light on the activist’s work to date. They wrote, “Disha has been an integral part of this movement. Not only has she been voicing out environment concerns in India but strived for the equality and representation of the country’s most affected and marginalized groups in the global climate movement’s narrative. Respectfully, legally and constitutionally. In solidarity with Disha Ravi, Fridays For Future India”
Disha Ravi was sent to three-day judicial custody by Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Friday. It was on February 19th, her five-day police remand was scheduled to end. The Delhi police claimed with the prosecutor that the 22-year-old activist was evasive during interrogation.
Addressing her arrest, Ravi denied any conspiracy involved in the matter and said she just wanted to support the farmers. She also claimed that she didn’t actually create the toolkit. Instead, she just made two edits to the document.
