The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has said today that the Central Government of India has provided 21 crore vaccine doses (21,07,31,130) to states/UTs so far. These units include both free of cost category and through direct state procurement category, the ministry explains. Reports suggest that the total consumption (including wastages) is 19,09,60,575 doses.
Nearly 2 crores (1,97,70,555) COVID vaccine doses are still available with the States/UTs to be administered, the ministry noted. Furthermore, nearly 26 lakh (25,98,760) vaccine doses are in the pipeline and will soon be delivered to the States/UTs within the next 3 days.
The COVID vaccination process is the most vital weapon right now the Indian Government has for the containment and management of the pandemic. The procedure also includes Testing, Tracking, Treating, and Maintaining COVID Appropriate Behaviour. As part of the nationwide vaccination drive, the Government of India has been supporting the States and UTs while providing COVID Vaccines free of cost.
The Government of India has also given authorization for facilitating the direct procurement of vaccines by the States/UTs. Implementation of the Liberalized and Accelerated Phase 3 Strategy of Covid-19 Vaccination has started from 1st May 2021.
During every month, 50% of the total Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL) cleared vaccine doses of any manufacturer would be procured by the Govt. of India, as planned by the Phase 3 strategy. It would continue to make the vaccine doses available to the State Govts totally free of cost which was the case earlier as well.
