Another surprising turn of events is to be added to the Uttar Pradesh election news. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Congress’ national secretary has announced today that 40 percent of the party’s tickets in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections will be reserved for women giving preference to girl power. At a news conference today, Vadra stated, “Women can bring about change, and they need to stand up.”
“This choice is for the girls of Uttar Pradesh…… This decision is for women who desire change,” said Ms. Gandhi Vadra, who was charged by her brother Rahul Gandhi three years ago with capturing Uttar Pradesh for the Congress.
There was a catch, though. “The ticket will be determined by the candidate’s competency,” said the 49-year-old, who entered politics in January 2019 right before the Lok Sabha elections that year.
In Uttar Pradesh, caste has always played a significant influence in elections. The BJP is regarded as seeking to appease the Brahmins in the next elections, which are expected to be held next year.
The nomination of Yogi Adityanath, a Rajput, for the top job has enraged the so-called higher caste. This is viewed as a significant reason why Ajay Mishra, whose son was imprisoned in the case of farmers being driven over in Lakhimpur Kheri, is still serving as the Centre’s junior minister for home.
Congress and other opposition parties have frequently called for the minister’s resignation. In the midst of this, Congress appears to be emphasizing greatly the gender issue in a state where many crimes against women have been documented in recent years. Some of these incidents include the gang rape of a Dalit lady in Hathras and the case in Unnao, which grabbed national headlines and sparked anger.
This move by Priyanka Gandhi will also be kept in high regard as such a move also tend to grab the attention. Her preference for girl power can shift the poll results if it resonates with the people of the state. However, UP, where caste-based politics is what everything is all about, can this girl empowered move really help the Congress battalion?
On the contrary, Ms. Vadra has claimed individuals who “speak up” in the state are “crushed,” referring to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Gandhi is leading the charge with full-on assault on the BJP. For more Uttar Pradesh election news, stay tuned on Janta Power.
